Chris Holiman began his Musical journey as the frontman of the 80's and 90's folk pop band The River Roses. After that outfit broke-up he began the band 35 Summers. This project "Solo Parts" was begun in 2000 after that second band dissolved. It is a collection of moody songs mostly written around the time of Holiman's Father dying. He wrote the songs while playing guitar on a tour in Europe for his friend Chris Cacavas. The songs hold the mood of those grey winter days in europe mixed with the saddness of his father's passing. When he decided to record the songs he enlisted the talents of Drummer Tom Larkins (who mostly preforms with Jonathan Richman, notably appearing in the movie "Something About Mary" along side jonathan) & also some help from Joey Burns from Calexico. Joey played stand up bass and cello on some of the projects most haunting tracks. The project was completed and released in 2002. Holiman was at this time busy with his new band The Downtown Saints, so the CD didn't get the attention it needed. However Holiman is recording a new solo album and planning to promote this CD and the new in the coming year.

This new CD by Chris Holiman & The Downtown Saints is called "Here Comes The Break Up." It is an album that features the words and voice of Chris Holiman, a skilled guitarist and fine singer-songwriter. In "Your Fallin'," Chris sings with beautiful harmony over quickly paced, yet calm, acoustic guitar playing. "Rush" is a pleasant tune that moves from a pop-rock style to a bluesy sound and back again. In "Mailbox," Chris lets his angst and sorrow show as he expressively pours his heart out over an evocative rock backing. This is an album that is anchored in Holiman's excellent vocals and a varied pop-rock style that doesn’t shy away from exploring the darker elements of the singer’s world. That being said, "Here Comes The Break Up" leans more towards an adult-contemporary sound over that of traditional pop-rock but, overall, Chris Holiman has delivered a terrific CD for fans of gifted singer-songwriters.

Chris Holiman's most recent album is "The Sailor's Daughter." It is an album that centers on Holiman’s acoustic guitar and vocals and is recorded in what would be considered an Alternative Country or Folk/Pop style. The first track, "Ride Through Sky," is a graceful song in which Chris and his guitar are accompanied by a smooth and serene cello in a song that easily flows with its melodic lyrics. In "Running This World" things get a little quicker paced, as Chris shows us his edgier side in a song that partners with a more upfront percussive section and the added flavor of the exceptional tones of the Hammond B-3 organ. In the title track, "The Sailor's Daughter," we find a more Country like song as an expressive steel guitar gently wails throughout the piece. If you are a fan of acoustic-led, mellifluous music with a Folk/Country leaning then this album might be for you. Fans of Wilco or Richard Buckley would do themselves good to take a listen to Chris Holiman's latest album "The Sailor's Daughter."

RadioIndy is pleased to present Chris Holiman with a GrIndie Award for the CD "Solo Parts" “Solo Parts” is an acoustic-driven folk rock album from talented singer/songwriter Chris Holiman. This album is filled with moody songs that reflect the time and place in which he wrote the songs – during a dreary European winter just after his father's death. Through great lyrical imagery and a sorrowful delivery reminiscent of Wilco's Jeff Tweedy, Holiman invokes his sadness with each note. Though the arrangements on “Solo Parts” mostly rely on Holiman's acoustic guitar performance, the album also features nice electric solos from Holiman, solid work from Tom Larkins on drums, and great cello and stand-up bass work from Calexico's Joey Burns . Together they have crafted twelve great folk rock tracks that do Holiman's lyrics justice. This album is well-produced and sounds professional and clean. “My Father's Son” is an acoustic tribute song that tells the sad tale of Holiman's strained relationship with his father, concluding, “Sometimes I try to hide it/But I can't deny/I'm my father's son.” “Leaving Europe Today” is another sad acoustic track that features Joey Burns' haunting cello progressions in the background. Overall, “Solo Parts” is an impressive solo debut from a well-rounded musician. Fans of moody folk rock and great singer/songwriters, check out Chris Holiman.-Chris & the RadioIndy.com Review Team |
