Artist History

Deborah Malena, a southern California native has been a professional musician and singer most of her life.  Once a teacher, she has done studio work, and has performed all over the world.  Deborah worked with country hall of fame member, Cliffie Stone and producer, Ray Ruff.  She has sung on two of Pat Boone albums.  Deborah plays bass, keyboards and musical saw.  She has four sons, two dogs and a great husband, Garth, who is also her guitarist.

During the struggles and storms of living in the world, she has been blessed with a powerful faith.  Her musical witness communicates God’s amazing truths filled with grace and peace.

Deborah as a song writer has discovered that the Lord really does choose the most unsuspecting, unworthy, and least likely of His children to spread His message.  She found that through the struggles of her own personal life, God was whispering messages of hope.  she started writing down the words that God was speaking to her and the words became songs and the songs became messages

Through the songs that she has written, she has been able to pass on the hope to all who are hurting.  Knowing that music is a universal language, God has used Deborah and her music to speak to those who perhaps would not otherwise listen  Through her testimony and performance, she is a witness and a living example of one who still struggles with daily living, but knows without question that God is carrying her through it all.

Garth Phillipsen is a multitalented musician.  He was taught guitar by his father a great big band guitarist.  His major influences as he continued playing was Meryl Travis (Travis Picking), Chet Atkins, and Jerry Reed.  He has quite a vocal range from joining Deborah in the female alto range all the way to low, low bass.  In fact on You Hold Me and You Rock me, he completes the song with a double low C.  Yay Garth.  He has been a pro for all his adult life playing in many venues from Gospel, Nightclub, and Festivals.  Also working with Cliffie Stone, he performed with many greats including Tennessee Ernie Ford, Tex Williams, Stuart Hamblin, Gene Autry, Molly Bea, Roberta Linn (Lawrence Welk's original Champaign Lady), Eddie Dean and Tommy Cash to name a few.  He has lived all over from Southern California to Alaska and many places in between.  He has three grown children.

RadioIndy is pleased to present Deborah Malena with a GrIndie Award for the CD "Can You Hear Me Now"

"Can You Hear Me Now" is an excellent contemporary Christian album with a southern/gospel flair from Deborah Malena. Deborah's voice and lyrics draw you in immediately. She is quite a talented writer, and her inventive words flow right off her tongue. Her voice has a similar power and vulnerability to that of Karen Carpenter. The songs are all very well arranged, and the instrumentation compliments Deborah's style very well. Above all, “Can You Hear Me Now” displays fantastic songwriting on all ends, allowing the album to flow along with ease. The production is great and gives the album a timeless quality. "Master of the Waves" opens things up with a fantastic song structure, a warm vibe, and excellent performances all around. Other highlights include the title track, "Can You Hear Me Now," with a fantastic guitar progression, great changes, and a wonderful vocal performance filled with great harmonies and an impressive display of vocal range. "Jesus Loves Me Even Though" strips things down to acoustic guitar and vocals, giving the listener an intimate experience with Deborah. If you enjoy great singer/songwriters with a strong message and a world of talent, give Deborah a try.-William and the RadioIndy.com Reviewer Team
