Debuts at #41 for the week of May 21, 2010 on the Root and Blues Music Report
Hounds Tooth’s CD, Soul Rockin (Tweed Tone Records), is a guitar-driven, modern blues album that focuses on original music with a few high-energy covers added to the mix. Soul Rockin, scheduled for release on May 19, 2010, has been receiving some great early reviews: "Hounds Tooth is no longer under the radar.
Their new CD, Soul Rockin, will push this band into the fast lane of the blues world, keep your eye on these guys!" - Scott Gregory, Entertainment Director, River City Blues Society
"In a mostly live recording, the band does 7 originals out of ten tunes in real journeymen style. Rockin’ stuff with fine playing, good vocals and a good sense of how much is enough. They throw down with tunes that nod to Slim Harpo, George Thorogood, Robben Ford, and Freddy King…and rock it up while they’re at it. Adept and fun. Genuwine dancin’ stuff. Not for Morning Mix." - Cathi N. - WFHB 91.3 FM Bloomington, Indiana
The songs on the CD move from laid-back greasy shuffles to funky rhythms to guitar-driven blues-rock. Guitarist/vocalist JD Optekar showcases his song-writing talents with tunes that pay tribute to the blues, Blues is Truth and Black Coffee; commentate on our current digital media-age, Is it Real; and visit the tried and true themes of passion, heartache, and love. Jared James Nichols, who appeared in the Earwig Documentary, Six Generations of Blues, lends his fretboard skills to the CD and his vocals on 3 tracks. Bob Noll (bass) and Jeff Oscarson (drums) anchor the rhythm section.
"Hounds Tooth seems to have found their stride with Soul Rockin. They move seamlessly between Blues and Rock, which should hit home with the children of Classic Rock. I know it did with me." - Ron Hoerter, Great Northern Blues Society
Hounds Tooth will tour throughout the Midwest this summer in support of their new CD playing festivals and top blues rooms including: Famous Dave’s Bluesfest; Bowlful of Blues Festival; Nothing But the Blues Festival; Prairie Dog Blues Festival; Madison Terrace Blues Festival; Waukesha County Fair; Racine County Fair; BBs Jazz, Blues, and Soups; River City Blues Society; The Club Tavern; The Busted Lift; Bourre’ Lounge, Blueport Junction; The Voodoo Lounge; and the Harmony Bar & Grill.
"J.D. Optekar and Hounds Tooth have grown into one of the most popular and exciting bands on the Milwaukee blues scene. Here the quartet continues to mine blues, rock (especially '50s-era rock) and soul for its slick sound anchored by the tight rhythm section of Bob Noll on bass and Jeff Oscarson on drums. The band also welcomes Jared James Nichols who guests on guitar and, on three tunes, vocals. The opener, "Blues is Truth," is fine urban blues and "Jumpin Rockin Rhythm" conjures Chuck Berry. "Time to Burn" opens with some great guitar interplay and "Is it Real" finds inspiration in Stax-style Memphis soul blues." - Bobby Tanzillo, Managing Editor, OnMilwaukee.com
"Milwaukee blues rock group Hounds Tooth sounds hungry and committed. When it comes to vocals and guitar chops, Jared James Nichols practices restraint where others of his generation (he cites Stevie Ray Vaughan as a formative influence) would add flash. The quartet of local music veterans might not add anything new to their post-Albert/B.B./Freddie King licks, but Bob Noll and Jeff Oscarson keep a tight rhythmic pocket between their respective bass and drums. Lyrics by Nichols' fellow axeman/singer, J.D. Optekar, express their style's customary pain and joy. Add remakes by stalwarts such as Leon Russell and Duke Robillard, and a formidable new blues force raises its profile around town." - Jamie Lee Rake, Shepherd Express
