Pianist Kathryn Woodard curates and performs programs that explore cross-cultural exchange in music. Her performances have taken her to China, Korea, Turkey, and the central Asian nation of Kyrgyzstan where she was the first pianist to perform the music of Henry Cowell, John Cage and Frederic Rzewski in that country. She performed at Carnegie Hall in 2008 and was featured on American Public Media's "Performance Today." Woodard has collaborated with institutions such as the Museum of Fine Arts Houston, the Asia Society Texas, and the Freer Gallery of the Smithsonian Institution where she performed concerts in conjunction with art exhibits, gallery openings and symposia. Woodard has curated several international music residencies at Texas A&M University where she is on the faculty, and she recently launched a music initiative, Sonic Crossroads that explores processes of musical exchange around the globe. As an advocate for new music Woodard has worked with such noted composers Karlheinz Stockhausen, Yehudi Wyner, Ge Gan-ru, and Huang Ruo. She has collaborated with several prominent artists including Min Xiao-Fen, Paula Matthusen, and the new music ensemble eighth blackbird. Her recording of Four Studies of Peking Opera by Ge Gan-ru with the Shanghai Quartet was released on New Albion Records. Woodard is also active as a composer and her music has been featured in several multimedia productions in New York City.

“Silhouettes” by Kathryn Woodard features her exploration of classical cross cultural piano music. Kathryn demonstrates dynamic feelings with a strict sense of time. Each piece gives the feeling that a story is being told, despite the fact that there are no lyrics. The piano has a mellow but crisp inviting sound that is soothing to the body and mind. The recording quality brings out the brightness and clarity of the upper register keys while the lower keys are deep and rich. “Seven Poems, No. 2,” an upbeat piece, presents a flowing chromatic scale on the upper keys, trills and turns, and a tremolo on the bass keys. “Silhouettes: Stravinsky” has a great staccato feel. Contrary motion is heard throughout this lively piece and the dissonance between notes is pleasing to hear. “Silhouettes” is a fantastic album, as each song has its own uniqueness and style with tempos varying from slow and serene to upbeat and happy. -Diane and the RadioIndy.com Reviewer Team Check out Kathryn Woodard's music on RadioIndy.com with link to purchase and links to popular sites |
