Born in Lawrence, Massachusetts in February, 1953... I fell under the spell of music at a very early age - at 9 years old I wanted to join the Beatles... Played my guitar in many Rock and Roll bands during the 60's, 70's, 80's and wisely kept my day job...
As a very young boy I had a special place for science fiction movies specifically "Forbidden Planet". It was hearing of that incredible sound track that truly set my course! As I matured, the music of Charles Ives, Edgard Varese, Claude Debussy, Frank Zappa, and John Cage became my staples. I taught myself electronics by building a synthesizer. I began the project in the mid 70's and it's not done yet.. 'Tis the nature of the beast - it's a work in progress. I am also mostly self taught in music composition, having only taken a brief moment of Harmony and Theory, finding my remedial keyboard skills problematic... God Bless sequencing programs! By way of general information I've played guitar for over 40 years, electronic, acoustic, and lap steel. My keyboard skills are rudimentary, as true independence of hands baffles me...
The Lily Pond Orchestra is more of an idea rather than a thing... It's named for a LOVELY spot in Massachusetts. There are no missing ships or unexplainable disappearances... just frogs and turtles, birds and squirrels and assorted other shy critters. It's place for contemplation... I compose, arrange, and do whatever else is necessary to get the sounds into a tangible form to share, and they never seem to come out as I had originally "heard" them...

RadioIndy is pleased to present The Lily Pond Orchestra with a GrIndie Award for the CD "On The Wings Of A Dragonfly" “On The Wings Of A Dragonfly” is an upbeat ambient new age concept album from The Lily Pond Orchestra. Douglas JP Lee is the orchestrator of The Lily Pond Orchestra, composing and creating all of the instrumental sounds you hear on the album. Lee has a way with formulating a broad concept for an entire album and sticking with it throughout. “On The Wings Of A Dragonfly” is no different as Lee embraces the outdoors and nature with an ode to the emergence of springtime in New England. The result is an upbeat, peaceful, and meditative sound that fully embraces and captures the essence of nature. The album is well-produced and sounds excellent. “Mossy Green and Turquoise” has some great keyboard work that creates a soundtrack to the sprouting of life and if you close your eyes you'll visualize these colors. “Mourning Cloak” is about the subject of inspiration for the entire album, the flapping of a butterfly's wings as it floats slowly away. “On The Wings Of A Dragonfly” is aptly titled, as it makes the listener feel as though they are floating through the springtime. Fans of ambient new age, be sure to pick this one up.-Chris & the RadioIndy.com Review Team |

“Pluto’s Melancholy…Music From a Dismissed Planet – Volume 1” is an ambient new age instrumental EP from The Lily Pond Orchestra. The Lily Pond Orchestra is comprised of one man, Douglas J.P. Lee, who is the mind behind every aspect related to the making of this album. The album title should suggest a concept, and Lee embraces and well-achieves this concept by creating an interpretation of what Plutonian music sounds like. The result is a thoroughly haunting, drifting, meditative, contemplative, and peaceful ambient sound. Through the mediums of synthesizer and keyboard, Lee paints a picture that truly shows what it means to be a digital musical artist. The recording quality is also very good and succeeds in allowing the listener to drift off as carelessly and as happily as possible. “Of Myth and Mystery” has a very new age-y feel as Lee turns up the synthesizers for our listening pleasure and makes you feel as though you are drifting between stars. With “Silver Wind,” Lee uses the synths to create a howling, fire engine-like wind that hovers and makes you wonder how Pluto got such a strong atmosphere. “Pluto’s Melancholy…Music From a Dismissed Planet – Volume 1” is a unique, creative, and imaginative album that truly embraces music as an art form. If you enjoy ambient new age and electronic music and miss Pluto being the ninth planet of our solar system, check out The Lily Pond Orchestra. -Chris and the RadioIndy.com Reviewer TeamCheck out The Lily Pond Orchestra's music on RadioIndy.com with link to purchase and links to popular sites |
