Artist History

J.R. Roberts, former lead vocalist for numerous bands over the years has an extensive background in performing and songwriting. He has toured with many rock icons such as the Doobie Brothers,Charlie Daniels and the Rossington Collins Band, former members of Lynyrd Skynrd, just to name a few.

Born in Mobile, Alabama, J.R. ha been stylistically referred to as a "White Al Green". At the age of six he started singing with his sisters on a local television station and in the teen choir at the Pleasant Valley Methodist Church. During his tenure he had the opportunity to sing with the renowned blues singer Jimmy Hall. His love for the great soul singers like Otis Redding, David Clayton Thomas and Ray Charles has given him that raw bluesy original quality. He has developed this style over the years as both a secular and gospel performer. He began hitting secular radio play lists in 1983 with songs, "Mighty Love" and "Hard Road To Rock And Roll". At that time, fans and critics started to take notice of his strong stage performance as well as his soulful vocal style.

J.R. rededicated his life to the Lord in the early 1980's and has never looked back. His latest recording, "Been To The River", is an incredible compilation of his singing and songwriting abilities. The listener will also enjoy instrumental and vocal performances by guitar virtuoso Sonny Lallerstedt, Grammy Award Winner and fiddler extraordinaire Vassar Clemments as well as other gifted musicians and singers.

J.R., his wife and children attend South point Community Church in Jacksonville, Florida where he is a member of the worship team. Additional information, photos, and tour dates can be found at his web site: www.jrob.us

Review of "Been To The River" by Xavier P. and RadioIndy.com!

“Been To The River” by J R Roberts is a unique cross between traditional blues and today’s contemporary Christian music. The musicianship, songwriting, and recording quality of this CD is very impressive. Opening with the blues-groove “You Are King,” listeners are immediately introduced to J R’s soulful and powerful vocals. It is clear that J R has quite a keenness for crafting memorable songs. Lyrically, these tunes are perfect for the congregational worship setting. J R showcases his unrefined country blues side with the very intimate title-track, “Been To The River.” Moreover, “Jesus Be The Lord Of My Life” ventures into the adult-contemporary genre and demonstrates J R’s vocal and musical versatility. All in all, this CD flaunts a wide appeal to fans of gospel, blues, jazz, and adult-contemporary and is well worth a listen.
