Floco Torres

Artist History
A large percentage of young americans that have ex drug and alcohol abusers for parents, have lived in multiple poverty type neighborhoods, and that have to struggle to earn everything they own don’t do to well. Sorry to all of you who have been through those things and aren’t making it, but this kid has turned two pair into a royal flush if you catch the drift. “I just love making music, it‘s cool to make a record and people tell you, (pause then smirks) that‘s hot” says the 21 year old MC with clear confidence. Kev bka Floco (Floco means skinny in Spanish given to him by a puerto rican grandmother close to the family. Torres was her last name) Torres born Kevin Williams Jr. was conceived in Trenton NJ and never sat still since. “I’ve lived in Trenton, Willingboro NJ and bounced the around the Central Jersey area. I lived in Macon GA for 9 years, Virginia for a brief second, (laughing loudly) I’ve been all over” he says. Always enjoying putting a pen to paper but never having the resources or the money for that matter, he kept his talents under raps (no pun intended) for quite a while. Developing a comic book at the age of 9 where he was a superhero (The Adventures of Kevin and Imani) with his little cousin Imani Talley, the sky was always the limit in his own mind. Getting decent grades in school and staying out of trouble with the law, he decided to start putting his thoughts to music at about 15 even though his parents weren’t big fans of hip-hop. “I wasn’t really allowed to listen to hip-hop too much. I used to sneak buying CDS at music factory so I could keep in touch with music”.

“I went through a lot with my family that I won’t get into, but I started just writing how I felt down on paper. I eventually started rapping over songs on the radio but I never told anybody (laughs again)”. Just as he seriously started perfecting rhymes at 15, he was also homeless at 15. Moving around with and without his family, dealing with his parents alcohol and drug abuse problems, Kevin had a lot to talk about and realized he saw the world a little differently. Meeting a fellow student at BCIT Westampton Kevin Landed a spot on an Independent Record Label in 2004 named Get It Right Records run by Co- CEO’s Karim “Reem” Abdullah and Jareef “Reef” Williams. Doing a number of shows stretching from Willingboro NJ to Roanoke VA, as well as featuring on the labels 3 mixtapes, Floco quickly learned the ropes of the recording and the business side of music “I learned a lot from those guys because that was my first time actually recording. So when you listen to “From Then Till Now”, you’ll see where I started and how I progressed ” . Kevin released his Nex In Line pt.1 mixtape under the label in 2006 and began to create a bigger buzz within the south/central jersey area. Things not working out as planned with the label, Floco parts ways with no hard feelings in 2006. Being solely independent, Floco kept working hard at his craft and released several songs leading up to his current release “From Then Till Now”, which is leading up to the long awaited Nex In Line Pt.2 Another World Mixtape. As tough as it is to break into the music biz, Kevin has remained optimistic about the process. Still attending college courses (part time dreamer as he calls it), making business moves that most 21 year olds are afraid of, and not to mention that this kid has definitely stepped his game up as an artist, the sky may not be the limit because he doesn’t have one. “Just enjoy the music because I enjoy making it for yall”!!!

Review of "From Then To Now" by Xavier P. and RadioIndy.com!

“From Then To Now” by the down-to-earth Floco Torres is one hip-hop collection that is full of compelling commodities. What makes this collection so memorable is the fact that Floco places heavy emphasis on the musical and melodic appeal of these tracks. “Sumthin Smooth” stands out because of its beautiful piano work and uncommonly sincere tone. “How You Feel” takes on a faster pace and delivers a very memorable chorus. Furthermore, “Sophistication w/ Sean L” takes on a compelling middle-eastern musical vibe. Lyrically, it is clear that Floco has quite a way with words and rhymes. These tunes are down-to-earth, highly relatable, poetic, and musically gripping. (Explicit)
