Lenka Lichtenberg is a Prague-born singer, composer, arranger, producer, etnomusicologist and a bandleader. She is in the midst of an amazingly diverse career, including singing as a member of the wildly successful all-female swing-klez band Sisters of Sheynville and also performing as a cantor at various functions (she was also a child star ; in a heavy metal rock band and on cruiselines, but all that is now water under the bridge!) . In 2006, Czech TV has made a documentary about her extraordinary journey (link from her website), and in November, 2007, the prestigious music magazine « Harmony » devoted full four pages to an interview with her. She finds herself now in Europe more regularly than ever, as her North American-learned Yiddish and liturgical repertoire -especially when infused by jazz and world beat sensibilities provided by Brian Katz - seems to find a great response from her audiences there. In Prague, she now collaborates with a number of musicians and bands and even a choir!
Brian Katz is an internationally acclaimed guitarist, pianist and recording artist, and a published composer. An expert improvisor, Brian draws on Jewish, jazz, classical and various folk traditions to form his personal sound. He has performed at major festivals and venues, such as the Toronto International Jazz Festival, Ashkenaz, WOMAD, and Kristofore International Jewish Festival in Holland.
SOLO (lenka) : concerts and workshops 2004-2007: Austria, Germany, Czech Republic, Australia, U.S.A., Canada. More traditional approach to folk music, original music and liturgy.
DUO : At festivals, Lenka performs mostly as a duo with Brian Katz, presenting a more jazzy, world music/world beat rendition of her repertoire. Ashkenaz (Toronto, 2006), Klezmore (Vienna, 2005), the Leeds International Festival of Performing Arts (UK, 2006), La Fete de la Musique (Geneva, Switzerland, 2007) and numerous concerts in the Czech Republic and New York. In 2006, Lenka and Brian released the critically-acclaimed Pashtes, Lenka’s third CD, which is now getting radio airplay in 23 countries and has received many excellent reviews. As well, Pashtes has been featured in a number of radio programs and on satellite radio ; for details, full reviews and more information, pls visit www.lenkalichtenberg.com.
«… Lichtenberg is a passionate, smoky-voiced cabaret chanteuse and tasteful arranger Katz is always an enchanting soloist » - Ori Dagan, The Live Music Report, October, 2007, concert review.
« …. One certainly does not need to understand Yiddish to appreciate these songs. The emotion and depth of the lyrics, and the musical creativity of the settings and arrangements, are communicated through Lichtenberg and Katz’s fine performances. And even in the transformation from one language to another, none of the poetry seems to be lost. » Mike Regenstreif, Sing Out! Summer 2007 (review Pashtes)
"There is an emerging group of Toronto-based Jewish jazz divas - Theresa Tova is another – and Lichtenberg is moving towards the head of the class quickly, if her new CD is any indication." George Robinson, The New York Jewish Week, December, 2006 (review Pashtes)

"Pashtes" by Lenka Lichtenberg & Brian Katz is a tremendously creative and musically inspiring CD. The instrumentation on the CD is brilliant - Especially Brian Katz's acoustic guitar work. This professional musical accompaniment provides an effective backdrop for the tremendous vocal performances of Lenka, whose voice provides pitch-perfect vocals in a very smooth and soothing manner. The CD is filled with subtle details of intricate play between the vocals and instruments that demonstrate the care that went into this recording. The production and recording quality provide a crystal clear experience for the listener. "Zing a Gezang" is one of our favorite tracks, with its upbeat catchy tempo and tremendous acoustic guitar work. "Yo, Ikh Gloyb" has a more jazzy feel, with an intricate musical depth provided by countermelodies of a horn section. If you enjoy world music or hearing the works of musical virtuosos, this is a CD that is definitely worthy of your attention.-RadioIndy Reviewer Team
