| Sky Cries Mary began in the late 80s' along with many of Seattle's underground-turned mainstream elite of the 90s. They've shared the stage with Green Day, Hole, 311 and Weezer and many others but have continued in stamina while other acts have waned in this new digital era. Their name is inspired by the song The Wind Cries Mary, that was written by perhaps the most influential Seattle psychadelic rock innovator: James Marshall Hendrix. Sky Cries Mary strives to continue that tradition: not just in their songwriting and showmanship but behind the scenes as well. The band signed with Capitol subsidiary World Domination Records in 1993. They released Until the Grinders Cease, Don't Eat The Dirt, Exit at the Axis, A Return to the Inner Experience, and This Timeless Turning all in the span of four years. In 1994 they partnered with Starwave to become the first band to ever give a live concert on the Internet. They were also the first band to ever create their own CD Rom Coconut Soup and Other Appetizers which was featured on NBC's special programming discussing Microsoft's new CD ROM technology and how musicians could use it to create their own music. When their contract with Capitol expired, they hopped over to Warner, released Moonbathing on Sleeping Leaves in 1997 and soon left when the constraints of large-label models took their toll on their creativity and the band itself. Sky Cries Mary then took a hiatus from music and one another. Fast forward to 2004. The band has sinceformed their own imprint Hoodooh and released Here and Now, a series of live recordings. They are preparing a new record, Small Town, to be officially released in March 2008. Sky Cries Mary's music has been featured in film (Bourne Supremacy) and performed on television (Conan O Brien, Jon Stewart Show). The band has performed to sold-out crowds around the world and will tour in support of Small Town throughout 2008. |
