Before Papasean Johnson came to be there were a few bands and various genres of music. His writing style came to be from listening to all styles of music from 70s and 80’s rock to the power pop hits of the 90’s. He started out playing classical guitar as a youngster but this wasn’t were he passion was. Wanting to emulate the guitar bands he listened to on the radio he bought his first electric guitar, a gibson explorer, peavey amp and fuzz box. Even though Sean knew how to read music he learned all his favourite tunes by ear. Improvising was what he loved to do the most, adding his own feel and interpretation to the music. Realizing he didn’t want to play other peoples music he decided to start writing his own.At the time Sean was not a singer he had the lyrics and the music but no one that wanted to spend the time involved with working on his songs. This was very frustrating to say the least, but kept on writing. Life continued on, he moved to Vancouver B.C. in the early 90’s from Northern Ontario and the music faded out of his life. Work, bills and the responsibilities of a young man took precedent now. Music was always in the back of his mind, waiting for the day he could get back at it. This seemed to be more of a fantasy than a reality after a while. In 2007 Sean lost a close friend and this changed his life. Deciding that his life was far off course he dove into writing. Within a year he released his first album called “ The Colours Of Blues” which he recorded the entirety himself. Now he needed to find some musicians to start playing shows. A few adds in the local paper later and he found himself a great drummer and bass player, Doug Collins and Louise Prevost. Now he was ready to start what he always wanted to do. In 2009 Papasean Johnson released his second album “Movin’ On” and from now on there is no looking back..

"Movin’ On" is the latest album from Papasean Johnson. It is an album recorded in the Blues/Rock style of a generation past, with catchy guitar riffs over driving beats coupled with energetic and loud vocals. "Ain't No Friend of Mine" combines elements from 50's rock with a contemporary edge in a rock song that really swings. "Young And Restless" is a grittier song that reminisces about the good old times of youth. For "Still Love That Girl" we find a more traditional blues song that is adapted into the groovy and loud style of Papasean Johnson. Overall, "Movin’ On" is filled with a plethora of cool riffs over rhythmic beats that lie somewhere in-between straight-rock and dance-rock. This album is a good find for people who enjoy the likes of ZZ Top or other high tempo Blues/Rock acts.

"The Colours of Blues" by Papasean Johnson is a swinging bar room blues album. Papasean's voice definitely has that "Old Soul" blues quality and is complemented well by his crafty guitar work and polished tone. Can't help but think of the late Stevie Ray Vaughan while listening to this one. Highlights are "Another Day," which rolls nicely, has some clever changes and features some slick steel guitar work."Sometimes I Wonder" takes you right down to the swamp with twangy rolling guitar and throaty vocals. "Jezebel" is a foot tapper with a tight little drum beat and a cool riff. If you like Stevie Ray Vaughan, Robert Johnson or Eric Clapton give this CD a try. -William and the RadioIndy.com Reviewer TeamCheck out Papasean Johnson's music on RadioIndy.com with link to purchase and links to popular sites |
