Artist History

Daniel Gauthier was born on April 2, 1959, in Senneterre, Abitibi.

He began his musical journey in 1973 when he joined a local band called L’Odyssée.  Only three years later, when he was just seventeen, his first professionnal contract convinced him to leave his hometown for Sherbrooke, to join the songwriter Stephen Faulkner who was working on his first solo album. Daniel immediately connected with the beauty of the Eastern Townships and decided to stay there to collaborate on several regional cultural projects.

In 1997, after 24 years of work, he finally launched his first solo album: En ce jour et pour toujours. Originally considered strictly a demo, Daniel used this album to introduce his musical universe and to present his multi-instrumentalist approach to the music industry. Even as a demo album, the many positive reviews of his work confirmed that Daniel was on the right path.

Three years later, in April 2000, Daniel released his second album, Above the Storm.

This album was acclaimed by reviewers from all around the world, many of whom didn’t hesitate to call this work “a masterpiece”… Powerful praise for an independently produced album.

It took 5 five more years before Daniel made a come back on CD.

In April 2005, he released a limited edition CD/DVD of a live performance of the title song The Wish”. The beautiful art layout and the power and energy of the music both confirmed that the album The Wish would be very promising.

Finally, November 2008 marked the release date of The Wish (the album).

Daniel Gauthier chose to create the album as a “one man project”, which made the album a quite impressive undertaking.

Gauthier’s musical universe is clearly rooted in the progressive movement of the late 70’s created by Yes, Genesis and Pink Floyd, but the “dg” style has a definite  presence in his work.

At the moment these words are being written, Daniel Gauthier is working on a new album in French, scheduled to be released in 2009.

To be continued ...

Daniel Gauthier has recently released his latest creation “The Wish,” compiled with original classic/progressive rock music. As an artist, Gauthier displays his creativity with beautiful multi-layered compositions filled with melody, rhythm, and harmony. Quality production is seen through how each instrument is harmonious to each other. In the title track “The Wish (Part I)” displays strong and powerful guitar passages while the bass has a steady, catchy riff. “The Clock” exhibits cool synth sounds with mysterious ambiance and tonality. With a sort of outer space feel to it, “Once in Time” features vocals that are soft and soothing with mood-altering lyrics. If you like Pink Floyd or Yes, don’t miss the chance to hear “The Wish” by Daniel Gauthier.

"The Wish" Limited Edition Single Reviewed by RadioIndy.com!
POSTED BY: EricLawrence POSTED ON: 24 Jul 2008 10:58 AM

"The Wish" is a limited edition CD/DVD single from progressive rock artist Daniel Gauthier. Daniel draws his style from many of the British progressive bands from the ‘70s, such as Pink Floyd and Yes, and the product delivers. This single is a live performance of the song, but it sounds fantastic and creates in the listener the sensation and urge to see Gauthier live. “The Wish” is very dynamic with intricate layers and superior musicianship. All of the instruments are well-represented, and there is very little crossover in the sound as a whole. The arrangement is a progressive rock lover's dream: atmospheric synths, a funky, crunchy, active bass line, precise, technical drumming, and wailing guitar solos. It is definitely a ride from start to finish. If you enjoy highly dynamic instrumental progressive rock, give Daniel Gauthier a listen.

"Above the Storm" Reviewed by RadioIndy.com!
POSTED BY: EricLawrence POSTED ON: 24 Jul 2008 11:31 AM
Canadian rocker Daniel Gauthier’s “Above the Storm” is an elegant symphonic progressive rock album that displays Gauthier’s solid musicianship throughout. A multi-instrumentalist, Gauthier is to be held accountable for all of the bass, keyboard, acoustic guitar, and vocals you hear on the album, all of which are more than worthy of praise. His vocals have a certain charm to them, as he is a French Canadian singing in English. Combined with the music, they effectively give the album a sound similar to Pink Floyd and Yes. “Above the Storm” was also excellently recorded, so you can enjoy this album to its full potential. While the symphonic prog rock sound is the key to the album, Gauthier’s lyricism is also quite impressive. For instance, with “Evening of a New Romance,” he opens with the haunting and beautiful, “Cast an eye on the man who suddenly could become yourself/His mind explodes like a rainbow in the sky.” The title track begins with a storm that turns ambient and rises, well, “Above the Storm” around the one minute mark. “Cross the Bridge” begins with a great bass line and progresses from there. Overall, “Above the Storm” is an enjoyable album to be recommended to anyone who enjoys the musical intricacy that comes with progressive rock.
