Artist History
I began studying the classical guitar at age 15, and later played in a “New Age” folk-rock band called Anahata. In 1978 I began the serious study of classical music, under the tutelage of Celin Romero, of the world-famous Romero Guitar Quartet. I started my college and university studies in 1979, and graduated from San Diego State University with a Bachelor's Degree in Music in 1983 (and was selected as the “Outstanding Graduate of the Year” by the music department faculty). Two years later I received my Master’s Degree, also from SDSU. In 1995 I began composing my own music for the classical guitar, and that is mostly the music I play today. I currently have one solo recording available, Songs Without Words, and have played on many other recordings with former Anahata band members Timmaris McDowell and Diane Bardwell, and others. My music and playing also appear on several audios and videos of yoga postures and guided meditations. I have composed more than 50 pieces for the classical guitar, with more appearing all the time.

 “Songs Without Words” is a soothing collection of instrumental classical/folk guitar compositions from Jeff Calcara. Calcara’s musicianship is similar to that of folk guitarist Leo Kottke, though Calcara leans more toward the classical end than folk. Each song is lulling, original and carefully crafted; conveying a soothing, powerful and emotional message solely created from the picking and strumming of an acoustic guitar. “Songs Without Words” is also well-produced, with each note hitting the listeners ears crisply and cleanly. “Song of the Sea” is a befitting title as the song carries you away and hits you in waves of guitar perfection. The trio of tracks, “Lullaby #1,” “Lullaby #2,” and “Lullaby #3” make you want to just close your eyes and listen, putting you in such a state of relaxation that you may find it hard to avoid a complete state of subconsciousness. Collectively, “Songs Without Words” is an incredible album that shows the raw and lasting talent of guitarist Jeff Calcara.
