The Shells, a trio consisting of young female performers that are a completely original pop/folk-rock harmony group. Their original sound has appropriately been dubbed as “cosmo country”: a blending of city pop with country folk-rock and intricate harmonies. All three women stumbled upon an audition for a three-part harmony group back in 2005 while pursuing their individual careers in the arts. Four years in the making, The Shells have grown from simple a cappella harmonies to performing with a full band at renowned New York City venues such as The Knitting Factory, The Bitter End, Pianos, and the Canal Room. They have released their debut album Written Roads on October 8, 2009.
Written Roads was produced by Ryan Williams, who has also worked with major industry artists such as Linkin Park. In addition, Williams played almost all the instruments on the album. All songs on Written Roads were penned by the different members, showing the ladies’ breadth of musical talent.
With the impending release of Written Roads, The Shells are set to share their cosmo-country sound with the rest of the world!

"Written Roads" by The Shells is a strong and powerful Alternative Country/Rock album. The CD, being Alternative Country, fuses in many Rock style elements with melodies that are pure Country in which this creates a hard-hitting and fully enjoyable listen. The opening track, "All I Need is Time" stays true to the band's down-home Country roots both lyrically and melodically. The harmonies in this track fits perfectly while each note played by the acoustic guitar complements the vocals as the emotional lyrics are of pain and the need and will to recover. The song, "I Will Believe You" relies on a progressive tempo and ambient notes that puts the listener in a smooth trance. Country is well-showcased in this album and for those fans who love bands like the Dixie Chicks and singers with the same range and tone must experience the exceptional compositions and lead vocals/harmonies of "Written Roads."

Had The Shells been a band of the early 60’s, they would have been in vogue. Their contemporaries would have been, Pete Seeger, Arlo Guthrie*, Joan Baez, Peter, Paul & Mary, Bob Dylan, to name a few. Many of The Shells fans aren’t old enough to know these “Folk” singers, but your parents &/or your grandparents may have introduced you to some of their music perhaps when you were a toddler, “ Puff the Magic Dragon”, “ Leaving on a Jet Plane”, “This Land Is My Land” and “Blowing in the Wind” The Folk singers of the 60’s sang for peace, they sang about the environment, and about freedom, but mostly they sang for Change. The Shells also sing for Change, at the Aids Walk last May, and Tomorrow Friday Sept 18th when they will open the show “Rock Against Homelessness” The passing of Mary Travers is sad for me. My parents introduced me to the music of Peter Paul and Mary, Puff the Magic Dragon was a childhood favorite, which still has an appeal. I feel my own mortality slipping away, have I made a Change? Time is passing, and lessons have not been learned. We are still at war, people still go to bed hungry and Earth is second to industry and People are still not Free! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1y2SIIeqy34 Please heed the words of those who have dedicated their lives to Change, come to Central Park on Friday afternoon, listen to the music, then Make a Change. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3t4g_1VoGw4 * Arlo’s father Woody Guthrie is the pinnacle of American Folk Music |
