Artist History

Begun in 1975 by Doug and Jeff Carlson, this Fresno, California based band toured the California extensively in the 1970's and 80's.  As the band's popularity increased additional musicians were added to the mix. The core elements in place, they recorded their first album, "Folly's Pool". Doug continued to expand his writing and the band had many guest musicians sit in. In 1987 Doug recorded a second album of his songs called "Bathing Caps Required".

Now 20 years later, Doug and Jeff have been in the studio again. Together with Ray Haney doubling as engineer and bassist, they completed their their 3rd album, "Road Through Independence".

Folly's Pool

In its time, Folly's Pool did well for itself: getting spins of radio stations of KFIG and KYNO and opening for the likes of Bonnie Raitt, Tom Petty and James Taylor. Locally they were a favorite at Fresno's beloved music club, The Wild Blue.

The band released its first album in 1977, toured some, broke up around 1982, came back together for for another album in 1987, played for a year or so, stopped again, then rekindled the magic for the 2007 CD "Road Through Independence."

During all those lapsed years, however, singer/guitarist/band founder Doug Carlson never stopped writing music.

When the band got back in contact four years ago, Carlson showed them what he had been writing and soon Folly's Pool was recording again.

"When I heard this material I was like, holy mackerel, this is really good stuff," says bass player Ray Haney. "We were very pleased with the way the CD came out."

The band played once in recent years, a birthday party for a friend, but its still '70s friendly rock sound is ready for Saturday's CD release party.

"There will be a lot of friends and people we haven't seen in a while," says Carlson, who started the band with at 23 with his brother Jeff and is now 52. "It's really flattering. It feels good to have people still interested after all these years."

"Road Through Independence" by Folly's Pool is an excellent smooth, piano-based adult rock album. The sound is very "California" with touches of Southern rock attitude. If you enjoy big name artists such as Jackson Browne, you'll enjoy this CD. The songs are upbeat, with blissful melodies and a "Concert" sound. These guys have been around for a while and it shows in their tight and polished sound. They write great songs - plain and simple. The arrangements are interesting and thoroughly developed. The lead vocals are perfect for the sound, and the backups are smooth and delicate. This is a totally professional album full of radio-ready songs. Highlights include "China Town," a song that features interesting and unexpected changes. The track is very well-layered, as well. The title track "Road Through Independence" features a delicate piano line, a jazz-infused bass and a heartwarming vocal performance. "City Girls" brings out the honky tonk a bit, and is a sure sing-along. If you enjoy piano-based adult rock, you'll enjoy this outstanding CD.
